Earthly Beauty, Heavenly Art
The Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam |
| 1999 |
The stylised design for the exhibition is based on the distinctive features of Islamic architecture and decorative arts, such as the repetition of geometric motifs, especially the octagon. The colours used are derived from Mogul, Persian and Ottoman miniatures.
Playful vistas and panoramas have been created to arouse the inside-outside feeling between the 'gardens of the paradise' and the rooms of the palace. Grids and pavilion roofs provide shadow and privacy. Fountains, ponds, and the rustling and fluttering of birds in an aviary, serve to evoke the atmosphere of the 1001 Nights. |
