Department Western Asia & North Africa
Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam
1998, part of long-range project 1994 - 2010
The department is accessible from two sides; both entrances are marked by a semicircular introduction wall. In an impressive interactive model of the city of Aleppo, a light and sound show can be activated. Using the television in the replica retro café, one can zap along the famous songs of Um Kalthoum to whom this cafe is dedicated.
Interiors behind glass of a public bath and all kinds of shops evoke the exotic atmosphere of an Islamic city. A nomad tent and a reconstruction of a house in the Swat valley visualise the rural life. The 'mutual influence' between urban and rural is presented in displays in an octagonal cabinet.
