Face Values
Amsterdam Historical Museum
2003
In the Golden Age many illustrious people of Amsterdam were portrayed in paintings. The multitude of faces equally represents many stories about the people who contributed to the success story of Amsterdam.

In this exhibition, however, it is the subjects not the artists who are the focus. Proud of their status, profession, family, or background they chose to be immortalised by the famous painters of their time. We see them portrayed in various capacities: as a couple, a figure in a biblical story, with the whole family, in miniature, or in a large group portrait. The objective of the portraits was to be seen and admired, and the spacious layout of this exhibition offers plenty of opportunity to do just that.
